Who should win the Ballon d'Or?

1185369_502738636479841_1711935366_n.jpg

Twenty-three players have been shortlisted for the Ballon d'Or, but who will be the last man standing? The Football411 brains trust pick their winners...

Lionel Messi has won the award every year since its inception in 2010 and was the last recipient of the FIFA World Player of the Year the previous year.

Many predict that it is a three-horse race, with perennial favourites Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo joined by Bayern Munich's Franck Ribery.

According to the wise men and women in the F411 offices, the common perception is not wrong...

Sky Chomse:

Who will win: Lionel Messi

Who should win: Lionel Messi

Quite simply, every time I see Messi dance his way around the opposition, the subtle drop of a shoulder here, the burst of pace there, and the almost inevitable finish that follows fills me with an inordinate amount of happiness!

Lashias Ncube:

Who will win: Franck Ribery

Who should win: Franck Ribery

In the past the race for the the Ballon d'Or has become so predictable, with the usual suspects jostling for the award and the outcome a foregone conclusion. For the first time in almost five years there is another genuine contender to break up the Lionel Messi - Cristiano Ronaldo duopoly - Franck Ribery. It would be a travesty if the Bayern Munich star missed out.

Ribery was undoubtedly Bayern Munich's talisman last season. His displays typified the Bavarians' work ethic, seamlessly marrying the individual with the collective as Jupp Heynckes' men claimed the Treble.

Between them, Ronaldo and Messi still scored a truckload of goals last season. However, by their lofty previous standards the pair had below-par campaigns. The poster-boy "usual suspects" are victims of their success. Ribery should be every true football fan's choice.

Barend Prins:

Who will win: Franck Ribery

Who should win: Lionel Messi

Messi is undoubtedly the best player on the planet and his prowess in front of goal has once again seen him score more goals than any other player in Europe's top leagues (46). He also finished as the second highest scorer in South America's World Cup qualifying with 10.

Ribery was an influential player in Bayern Munich's Champions League victory, which often influences the judges' decision in terms of whom is selected. Nevertheless, he wasn't even voted as the best player in Germany (team-mate Bastian Schweinsteiger received that honour).

Roderick MacLeod:

Who will win: Lionel Messi

Who should win: Lionel Messi

Messi should win because he fulfills the narrowly defined parameters of what the award committee seems to consider constitutes the world's best footballer.

However, I feel these awards are at best pageants, and at worst, thinly veiled PR exercises. Cynical? Perhaps, but when the front runners for this year's award are already praised on an almost hourly basis by fans, players, former players, coaches and pundits, I cannot help but wonder if they really need another night devoted to the extolling of their individual brilliance.

The focus should always be on the team, and fixating on awards like this only serves to engender a cult of personality around individual players, making it all too easy to forget about the hundreds of backroom staffers, technicians and teammates who allow these uniquely talented players to excel.

Virgil Maia:

Who will win: Lionel Messi

Who should win: Lionel Messi

It may seem like an outlandish thing to say, but I think the fact that Lionel Messi has won the Ballon d'Or for four seasons running has devalued the entire process.

Some will say; Why bother having a voting process if every man and his dog thinks and believes Messi should claim the accolade for a fifth consecutive time?

FIFA announced a 23-man shortlist this week, but is it really necessary? Apart from giving certain outstanding or in-form individuals the recognition they deserve, does it really serve any purpose other than to make up the numbers?

Perhaps they should make a separate award for Messi and exclude him from taking part! At least that way, everyone else will have a chance of making the final three for the Ballon d'Or...

Julia Harris:

Who will win: Lionel Messi

Who should win: Lionel Messi

It should be noted from the outset that this award is skewed by the fact that goal-scoring seems the currency of choice when it comes to ranking footballers. Nobody remembers the last-ditch tackles or clearances off the line made by many a defender, it terms of accolades, it's the men up front who always rake in the plaudits.

As such, it has to be Messi that takes home the honour once more - the man is an incredible talent and while his brilliant feats often fail to garner the praise they deserve due to the frequency with which they occur, he remains a cut above the rest.

Strength in depth key to titles

Juan-Mata-and-Cesar-Azpilicueta-Chelsea_3027121.jpg

It looked nothing more than a routine win for Chelsea on Tuesday as they dispatched Arsenal 2-0 in the Capital One Cup, and it highlighted the value of strength in depth when it comes to challenging for silverware on multiple platforms.

Opinions remain divided over the value of the English League Cup, with the current trend seeing Premier League teams using the various rounds as glorified reserve squad matches to give their fringe players a run out in competitive action.

Even in the case of the Gunners, who have not won a piece of silverware in eight years and who would have viewed this cup as a legitimate target at the beginning of the campaign, Arsene Wenger still preferred to hand a large number of his second-team players a run out, regardless of what the trophy would mean to the club.

However, the north London side's squad weaknesses were brought to the fore against the Blues as second-choice full-back Carl Jenkinson, one of eight changes made from the team that beat Crystal Palace in the league on Saturday, endured a horror outing at the Emirates Stadium. It was Jenkinson's weak attempt to head the ball back to his goalkeeper that gifted Cesar Azpilicueta the opener while another error from the defender after half-time eventually led to Chelsea's second.

It was not only in defence where Arsenal looked out of depth, though, with Nicklas Bendtner being given his chance to start up front, but doing nothing to warrant further looks from the gaffer following a dire, aimless performance. Ryo Miyaichi too looked lost down the right wing, the channel from where most of the Gunners' attack usually develop.

Arsenal had, however, started the match with the star players the likes of Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey and Santi Cazorla in the centre of the park, although the gaping holes in defence and attack made the midfield job that much more difficult for the hosts, and all too easy for Mourinho's Chelsea.

It was by no means a 'first-choice' Blues team that romped to victory, either, as no fewer than 10 changes had been made from the side that beat Manchester City 2-1 in the top-flight on Sunday, with Gary Cahill the only player to get the nod in both games.

However, where Arsenal's back-up pickings were slim, Mourinho was able to call on players who could otherwise make up another full first team squad and, more importantly, one capable of winning trophies.

As it was, veteran stars Juan Mata, Michael Essien, Willian, John Obi Mikel, Gary Cahill and Samuel Eto'o were just some of the 'fringe' players utilised by the manager on the night, signalling a massive gulf in quality in the respective tacticians' options.

The fact Chelsea could go from scalping one of the Premier League title hopefuls in City to chalking up a second successive win by besting their rivals in the League Cup just two days later is testament to the squad depth needed to challenge on multiple fronts, and it would appear the Blues have this in spades.

A lot of credit for the options at Stamford Bridge goes down to the club's free-spending acquisition of star players over the years, where club owner Roman Abramovich's fortunes have previously made deals for David Luiz (£21m), Mata (£23.5), Essien (£24.5), Oscar (£25m), Eden Hazard (£32m) and Fernando Torres (£50m) possible.

The recent transfer period alone saw Willian (£31), Andre Schurrle (£19m) and Marco van Ginkel (£8) brought in by the west London giants, while veterans Mark Schwarzer and Samuel Eto'o (both free) were also signed in preparation for another gruelling campaign.

However, even with the current crop at Mourinho's disposal, the Portuguese tactician is more than likely to again delve into the market come January, with a move for a better player or more competent cover always on the horizon.

And while money does have a big part to play, it's not as if Arsenal are struggling on the financial table, having posted the greatest profit of any of last term's 20 Premier League teams, while they flaunted their spending power with the £45million signing of Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid in the recent transfer window.

However, that proved the only notable move made by the north London club, with Yaya Sanogo and Mathieu Flamini joining on free transfers, while goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano was brought in on loan.

Chelsea, on the other hand, added no fewer than eight members to their squad, two of them on the free while the other six cost a combined £66million.

So, while Arsenal may have started the season in blistering form, leading to their place at the top of the Premier League standings, it is in their squad depth where some of the biggest questions will be asked - questions Chelsea already seem to be able to answer with 10 of their arms tied behind their back.

The List: Switching Allegiance

Thiago-Motta-Italy-vs-Spain_2779703.jpg

Following Diego Costa's decision to turn out for Spain despite having represented Brazil, Football411 looks at other players who have represented multiple nations.

There are a number of players who have played for newer, smaller states after a bigger country has been broken up, with the former Yugoslavia a prime example of this. The division of Germany also meant that some players turned out for Germany as well as East Germany or West Germany.

However, there are an 'elite' few who have managed to represent to completely different countries at senior level.

FIFA have tightened regulations on the matter in recent years, but there are a number of familiar names in history that have represented multiple countries.

Thiago Motta - Brazil and Italy

The Paris Saint-Germain midfielder was born in Sao Bernardo do Campo, Brazil and turned out for Canarinho twice in the 2003 CONCACAF Gold Cup. However, he later held out for a spot with the Italian national team while turning out domestically for Inter Milan. In 2011, he got his wish and made his debut for the Azzurri against Germany and has since notched up 16 caps for his adopted country.

Alfredo di Stefano - Argentina and Spain

The Real Madrid legend is one the most high-profile names to have made a switch. The forward made his international debut for Argentina in 1947 and turned out for the South American nation six times before later representing Spain 31 times. He in fact played for three countries, although his four-match stint with Colombia in 1949 is not recongised by FIFA.

Michel Platini - France and Kuwait

The UEFA president played almost his entire career for France, the nation of his birth, notching up 41 goals in 72 appearances. However, having retired from international duty in 1987, Platini then represented Kuwait in an exhibition match the following year at the request of the Kuwaiti Emir.

Mehdi Carcela-González - Belgium and Morocco

Born in Belgium to a Moroccan mother and a Spanish father, Carcela-González had a number of options available when it came to pledging allegiance. The Standard Liège midfielder initially went with Belgium and represented the Rode Duivels twice before switching to Morocco in 2011.

Ferenc Puskás - Hungary and Spain

Like his Real Madrid team-mate Alfredo di Stefano, Puskás found the lure of playing for Spain too good to ignore. After representing Hungary on 85 occasions, scoring an amazing 84 goals, Puskás played for Spain in the 1962 World Cup. However, he was less prolific in front of goal for the Spaniards, failing to score in his four appearances for the nation.

Jose Altafini - Brazil and Italy

Altafini's case is an interesting one as not only did he represent two different countries, but he featured for each nation in successive World Cups. In the 1958 edition of the tournament he picked up a winner's medal with Brazil before turning out for Italy four years later. His second World Cup stint was less successful as Italy were knocked out in the group stages.

Jermaine Jones - Germany and USA

Jones turned out for Germany, the country of his birth, on three occasions in 2008 before deciding to throw his weight behind the USA, where both his parents hailed from. The Schalke midfielder has gone on to represent his adopted country 36 times.

Is it alright to boo your team?

Amazulu-fans_3026443.jpg

It would appear that the boo boys were out in full force in South Africa this past weekend as Kaizer Chiefs and Amazulu fell foul of the wrath of their own supporters.

Just 20 minutes into the Soweto derby on Saturday, a section of the Chiefs fans began to boo Kingston Nkhatha after the striker had made a less than stellar start to the game. On Sunday, Amazulu captain and goalkeeper Tapuwa Kapini left the field in tears after his side lost the Kwa-Zulu Natal derby 2-0 to Maritzburg United, a result that came on the back of a 7-1 hammering at the hands of Sundowns, with Amazulu fans hurling abuse and various objects at him.

In both cases, the fans had reasons to be annoyed. With so much riding on the result of the Chiefs/Pirates match for the supporters, frustration at Nkhatha's failure to execute the basics early on would certainly be frustrating. Likewise, having seen Kapini concede nine goals in two matches, the Usuthu faithful would not have been alone in their disappointment.

However, does this justify booing their own team? And if so, just what are supporters who boo trying to achieve?

A common argument is that fans have paid their hard-earned money to watch that match and as such they have every right to voice their dissatisfaction. Perhaps if you are in attendance simply to watch a game of football then you can claim you're being denied your money's worth by poor performances, but does a 'real' supporter turn on one's team so quickly?

It's clear that booing does not help the players on the pitch. Speaking after Chiefs secured a 1-1 draw, manager Stuart Baxter told The Sowetan that the booing was "madness" and "amateurish", but perhaps most important was his statement regarding how the players feel: "it's despised by everyone in the Kaizer Chiefs dressing room", he said of the boos.

Switching the focus back to Durban, Amazulu boss Craig Rosslee conceded that Kapini may be rested for the club's next fixture, suggesting that the mental toll on the player had become too much.

With this in mind, one can say that booing negatively affects the team and individual players who may be targeted. Is this what a supporter would want to achieve? If they have the club's best interests at heart then of course not.

Unfortunately there could be an added agenda to the boos in these two cases, with both Nkhatha and Kapini being Zimbabwean nationals.

It's pertinent to note that it's not only in South Africa where the behaviour of fans was anything but loyal.

Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas admitted his disappointment that the White Hart Lane faithful had made their match against Hull seem more like an away fixture, as they failed to get behind their side who were unable to break down a resolute Tigers defence until 10 minutes from time.

Elsewhere in London, Fernando Torres was on the receiving end of some stick from the Chelsea fans after missing a few early chances against Manchester City. The Spaniard bounced back to set up the Blues' opener before nabbing a winner late in the piece. Suddenly he was a hero again as his name reverberated around Stamford Bridge.

And perhaps here lies the primary point - the fortunes of players and teams can turn in an instant. If you're a supporter of the team and wish to celebrate their successes then you shouldn't be the first to jump on their backs when matters don't go according to plan - you take the good with the bad. There are enough opposition supporters to let them know when they've done badly; as a fan it's your job to remind your team that you're still behind them even when they're down and then to revel in their success when it comes. There is no place for booing your own team no matter how angry or frustrated you may be.

United Strike Late To Sink Stoke

Hernandez-scores-v-Stoke-300x198.jpg

Manchester United v Stoke City - Premier LeagueManchester United came from behind twice to sink Stoke City 3-2 in a thrilling battle at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Peter Crouch put the Potters ahead just four minutes into the game before Robin van Persie slotted the equaliser.

Marko Arnautovic restored Stoke's advantage before the break, but Wayne Rooney drew the game level with 12 minutes to go before Javier Hernandez nodded in the winner two minutes later.

Crouch put the visitors ahead in comical fashion with Phil Jones and Patrice Evra messing up a clearance which hit Crouch and sailed into the goal.

The lanky striker almost knocked in a second in the 13th minute before Evans wasted a glorious chance at the other end five minutes later.

Jonathan Walters was denied by David de Gea in the 26th minute while Nani sent a shot bouncing past the post moments later.

Rooney had a shot tipped over before the equaliser finally arrived as the England international's header was saved and Van Persie tucked away the rebound.

Their joy lasted just two minutes though as Arnautovic thumped a free-kick in off the crossbar, though De Gea could possibly have done better.

Tensions were rising after the break as United tried to find a way back into the game and their persistence was rewarded with 12 minutes to go as Rooney flicked a Van Persie corner home.

Hernandez would then knock the spirit out of Stoke two minutes later when he was left unmarked at the far post and he made no mistake.

Old Trafford remained tense in the final few minutes but United saw out the victory to claim a much-needed three points.

Neymar: It Was Emotional

Neymar-300x199.jpg

FC Barcelona v Real Madrid CF - La LigaBarcelona forward Neymar admits that he was delighted to score in his first Clasico, with the Brazilian opening the scoring in their 2-1 win over Real Madrid.

The 21-year-old was a constant threat in the first-half, displaying some superb skills before eventually being slipped in by Andres Iniesta and seeing his shot deflected in for the opener.

Neymar, who was heavily linked with both Spanish clubs before opting to join Barca, says that it was an emotional experience.

"It was very emotional to score in a the game in which all players want to play," Neymar said.

"I'm very happy about such a special goal but above all for the three points we got.

"I had seen many Clasicos, so it was great to play one. But it was so hard against a great team. Cristiano (Ronaldo) is a great player, but we have also many good players.

"I'm so happy about the victory, the team and the goal."

The Brazil international was also stunned by Alexis Sanchez's spectacular second goal for the Catalans, adding, "I'm lost for words. It's a golazo."

Bafana To Host Spain In Friendly

Spain-celebrate-2-300x199.jpg

Bafana Bafana will play the reigning world and European champions, Spain, in an international friendly match at Soccer City on 19 November 2013, with the game getting underway at 21:00.

The match will mark a welcome return for the winners of the 2010 FIFA World Cup which was hosted by South Africa, where they won through an Andres Iniesta goal.

SAFA President, Dr Danny Jordaan, said the match against the reigning World champions would kick-start a number of high-profile games featuring top soccer countries against Bafana Bafana.

"It is the new SAFA executive's mission to make Bafana Bafana world-beaters again and we have lined up top-class sides to play our senior national team. We could not have asked for a better start of this campaign than with the game against the reigning FIFA World Cup champions," said Dr Jordaan.

"It is a dream come true for many soccer fans to once again see the likes of Iniesta and Xavi in action at the venue where they made history by lifting their first World Cup trophy. This is going to be a block-buster of a game," added Dr Jordaan.

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) said it was excited to return to the city and venue that gave them fame.

"We wish to demonstrate our gratitude for the wonderful hospitality of the South African sports authorities and the support of the country's football fans during the 2010 South Africa World Cup, where Spain was proclaimed champion for the first time in history," said Spanish Football Association President, Mr Angel Maria Villar Llona.

"At the end of the match, played on 11th July 2010 at the same stadium, the top officials of the RFEF expressed their thanks for the support received and promised to return to South Africa to play a friendly match, in the same way we did in Vienna after winning the Euro 2008."

Added SAFA CEO, Dennis Mumble: "We are excited by this honour to play Spain and we ask all football lovers to rush to buy their tickets for this rare occasion as soon as ticket sales open. More information will be released in the next few days."

Bafana-versus-Spain a test for Igesund, says Jorda...

igesund-bafana.jpg

Bafana Bafana will face world and European champions Spain in an international friendly at the FNB Stadium on November 19.

"We have just clinched the deal," an elated South African Football Association (Safa) president Danny Jordaan told City Press.

"The match will provide Gordon Igesund with a huge opportunity to measure the progress he has made with the team," Jordaan continued.

"Spain is not just the best team in the world but boasts the best individual players from Barcelona and Real Madrid."

Jordaan said the match was a fulfilment of a promise made to him by Royal Spanish Football Federation president Ángel María Villar Llona after his team won the World Cup at the FNB Stadium in 2010.

"He promised that if I became (Safa) president, he would ensure that the team returns to the venue where they won their first World Cup. This is a very historic match for them as well," said Jordaan.

He said more details about the match would be released soon.

Spain, who are the reigning World and European champions after winning the World Cup in 2010 and Euro 2012, are currently ranked Number One in the world.

They also won the Euro 2008. This makes them the only national team with three consecutive wins of continental championships and the World Cup.

The European super power holds a record for the most consecutive competitive matches wins after being unbeaten in 29 outings from the 2010 World Cup until they lost 3-0 to hosts Brazil at the 2013 Fifa Confederations Cup.

Bafana Bafana are ranked a lowly 61 but made a welcome climb of seven places from the number 68 position they had occupied in September.

They will have to rely on such friendlies as they have bombed out of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers.

Milan Hold Barca

Kaka-150x150.jpg
AC Milan and Barcelona played out a 1-1 draw in their UEFA Champions League group stage match in Italy on Tuesday night. Milan thought that they had made the perfect start when Sulley Muntari slid the ball under Victor Valdes eight minutes in off of a pass from Robinho but the offside flag denied him. The Italians were on the charge though and a minute later Gerard Pique and Javier Mascherano misjudged a bouncing ball which allowed Robinho to get onto it and he fired home after exchanging passes with Kaka. Barca would slowly find their way into the game with Lionel Messi firing just wide in the 19th minute before Xavi, Neymar and Alexis Sanchez combined to open Milan up but the final cross from Messi was too close to the goalkeeper. The Argentina star remained heavily involved though and two minutes later he was slipped in by Andres Iniesta, and although it looked like he took too long to get his shot off, he got the ball out from underneath his feet and powered a shot into the bottom corner. Philippe Mexes had a terrific chance to restore Milan's lead in the 28th minute from a corner but he sent his header wide of the post with Valdes in all sorts of trouble. Neymar then went close for Barca on the stroke of half-time with a crisp volley that flashed past the far post. Robinho should have made it 2-1 eight minutes after the interval when Muntari fired a perfect cross into the Brazilian but he chose to go for a dummy with nobody in support and the goal gaping. Iniesta was denied at the other end two minutes later after he latched onto a pass from Xavi while Adriano smashed an effort wide with 20 minutes to go after some composed passing by the Catalans. Milan closed up in the final few minutes as Barca pressed for a late winner but in the end they had to settle for a point each.

Mou Praises Torres Attitude

178000705-150x150.jpg
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has praised striker Fernando Torres' attitude after he scored a brace in their 3-0 win over Schalke on Tuesday. The Spain international was given the nod ahead of Samuel Eto'o for the encounter and on his 100th start for the Blues, he inspired them to a comfortable win. Mourinho says that he has been impressed with Torres' attitude since taking over this summer, saying that although all his performances have not been great, he gives his all every time. "Sam [Eto'o] played well in the last game and Fernando also did today," Mourinho told Sky Sports. "I prefer to say we have strikers who work for the team and can score goals. Them and Demba [Ba] have enough quality to play for us. "[Torres] is a hard worker, he's not the kind of guy to hide behind the fee paid for him. He's had some not so good times since he came here, but he always kept his professionalism and since I arrived he's always positive. "Sometimes not playing so well, but always trying hard." The result on Tuesday took Chelsea to the top of Group E and was also the heaviest defeat handed to Schalke in Gelsenkirchen in the Champions League.

Totti picks up hamstring injury

Roma-v-Napoli-Francesco-Totti_3020928.jpg

Roma skipper and talisman Francesco Totti is facing a spell on the sidelines after picking up a hamstring injury in the 2-0 win over Napoli on Friday.

The 37-year-old has been at the forefront of the Giallorossi's imperious early form, having chipped in with three goals and six assists already this season to lead the club to the summit of the Serie A standings.

But the former Italy international was replaced just after the half-hour mark against the Partenopei and will be out for at least 10 days, according to a statement released by the club that read:

"Francesco Totti underwent tests this morning (Monday) which identified an injury to his hamstring.

"He will be reassessed in 10 days.

"The captain has already begun his recovery program."

Rossi Hat-Trick Sinks Juve

An inspired second-half hat-trick by Guiseppe Rossi helped Fiorentina come from two goals down to beat Juventus 4-2 at the Stadio Artemio Franchi. The champions started the game off brightly, showing their early intent and created the first chance in the 17th minute when Carlos Tevez left-footed shot was saved by Norberto Neto in the Fiorentina goal, after a stop start opening period. Facundo Roncaglia had the home side's first chance four minutes later when he let fly from 35 yards but the defenders long-range effort went just wide. Argentine striker Tevez then came close again with 25 minutes played, the former Manchester City player got on the end of midfielder Paul Pogba's cross but he's header flashed just wide of the target. Fiorentina struggled to break down the Turin visitors defence and were forced to try their luck from outside the box with Roncaglia again letting fly but his shot went straight at Gianluigi Buffon in the Juventus goal. Claudio Marchisio's right footed shot from outside the box was saved in the bottom left corner by Fiorentina goalkeeper Neto on the half-hour mark. Tevez then finally got last season's Serie A champions ahead when the Argentine was fouled in the box by Juan Guillermo Cuadrado. The striker then stepped up to slot home the 37th minute penalty and gave the visitors a well-deserved lead. Antonio Conte's men soon doubled their lead when French midfielder Pogba slotted home with five minutes left in the first-half. Viola did not give up and three goals in five minutes was enough to pull off a memorable comeback for the hosts. Fiorentina started their fight back when Juventus midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah fouled Matías Fernández in the box, and Rossi stepped up to slot home the penalty in the 66th minute to reduce the deficit. Vincenzo Montella's men equalised 10 minutes later when Rossi struck a fierce shot from outside the box fizzed past Buffon and into the bottom corner. The hosts then went ahead for the first time in the game two minutes later when Spanish winger Joaquín slotted past the Italian international keeper, after being set up by Borja Valero. Viola hero and current Serie A top goal scorer Rossi then completed his hat-trick, and completed the rout in the 81st minute with a smart left-footed finish from the edge of the box handing Juventus their first defeat of the season.

Torino Snatch Last Minute Equaliser

185429598-150x150.jpg
Torino snatched a late equaliser against 10 man Inter Milan to share the spoils in the 3-3 draw at the Stadio Olimpico Di Torino. This game came to life within a minute of the first whistle as Torino striker Alessio Cerci's left-footed shot crashed against the post with just two minutes on the clock. Inter then had the worst possible start when goalkeeper Samir Handanovic brought down Cerci in the penalty area conceding a spot-kick and getting sent off in the process with just five minutes played. Cerci who was this season's top goal-scorer so far this season until Guiseppe Rossi's earlier hat-trick, stepped up to take the penalty but he could not beat substitute keeper Juan Pablo Carrizo. The hosts grabbed the lead through Alexander Farnerud's left-footed shot which flew into the bottom corner with 21 minutes on the clock. The home side pushed forward in search of a second goal to kill off the tie and make their one man advantage count, but Inter had other ideas and levelled matters through a Guarín shot which fizzed into the bottom left hand corner on the stroke of half-time. Torino substitute Ciro Immobile who had come off the bench five minutes earlier then put the home side ahead once more in the 53rd minute, after the striker found the top left corner with his right-footed shot. The 10 men of Inter responded almost immediately when they equalised for the second time in the game through a Rodrigo Palacio header two minutes later. The visitors grabbed the lead for the first time in the game in the 71st minute after a wonderful cross by Ishak Belfodil was met by a sliding Palacio to tap home. Inter Milan looked to have pulled off a miraculous come from behind victory after playing 85 minutes with a man down, but Torino pulled off a last minute equaliser to cap a dramatic game of football. Nicola Bellomo who had just replaced Matteo Brighi 10 minutes earlier, struck a cross-cum-shot free-kick from the left and the ball evaded everyone including keeper Carrizo and landed up in the top corner with 90 minutes on the clock. Torino will rue Cerci's penalty miss as well as their sloppy defending, but they will be relieved to at least walk away with a point from this dramatic game.

Moyes Drops Vital Points Again:

Adnan-Januzaj-150x150.jpg

Manchester United has already dropped seven points in 4 home games despite loosing only 9 points at home last season! Since this EPL season began, Moyes and his boys have struggled to find their rhythm. Probably Moyes is haunted by the big club syndrome where several managers have failed to deliver at big clubs despite doing wonders at relatively small clubs. But all that said, David Moyes has to find a quick solution to this problem if he is to last longer at Old Trafford. Man U fans are not used to seeing Manchester City lying above the devils on the EPL log, and therefore, they won't allow their manager drop such vital points. In London, Arsenal showed again that may be they're serious title contenders this time round after wining 4-1 at the Emirates. They beat Nowich City.Their city rivals, Chelsea won by the same margin over Cardif. Elsewhere, Steven Gerald scored his 100th EPL goal as Liverpool

Call it FUFA or FUFA Ltd,but one thing is clear, atleast for now eng. Moses Magogo is the known top head of football in Uganda. But many wonder if the self proclaimed engeer has the stamina to hold on to the office. About three weeks ago, the fufa president initiated peace talks with USL(Uganda Super League) to have one top flight league in the country. Sources say,the talks went on smoothly only to be halted by some of his surbordinents who opposed the move. They went on with the help of Charles Bakkabulindi, state minister for sports to apply for FSL sponsorship from one of the beer companies in Uganda! The group vowed never to allow Kabenge and company into any fufa related activities again! They have openly critised him on different media fora on various issues including the S. Africa trip he made with Micho. In a way many see as a sign of retreat, the president withdrew without communicating and he went into hiding and the talks have since been prematurely aborted. SO, IS MAGOGO ACTING ON REMOTE CONTROL?

Can Safa survive latest crisis?

Bumpy ride ahead after the suspension of vice-president and withdrawal of key sponsors

Just 22 days into office, the newly elected SA Football Association (Safa) national executive committee (NEC) is in crisis.

» On Friday, it took a decision to immediately suspend vice-president Chief Mwelo Nonkonyana;

» Earlier in the week, giant banking institution Absa - one of Bafana Bafana's main sponsors - announced that it would not extend its contract when it expires in December; and

» Puma, which had terminated its agreement as Bafana's technical sponsor in January, sent out a statement confirming this.

There could be further knocks as all this happens at a time when government is deliberating a regulation that will ban alcohol advertising.

Should this happen, it will be a further blow to Safa as the other major Bafana backer is SABMiller, through its Castle Lager brand.

Absa and SAB had reduced their sponsorship from R100 million per year to R20 million each and this was read to be in relation to the degrading of the Bafana brand.

The national team had failed to qualify for the World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations, except when hosting the events in 2010 and this year, respectively.

Safa reported a R46 million loss at the end of its financial year in June.

Nonkonyana, whose suspension includes his removal as chairperson of the African Nations Championship (Chan) Organising Committee, issued a lengthy press statement on Friday indicating that he was fighting his suspension.

"I have written a letter to Safa acknowledging receipt of the letter of suspension and advising Safa that I am challenging my summarily suspension on the following grounds …," the statement reads and lists six points on which he is challenging the decision.

One of them is "the decision of the Emco (emergency committee) to consider the matter in my absence as (sic) violated my constitutional right to be heard before such a decision was taken".

Safa CEO Dennis Mumble yesterday told City Press that former president Molefi Oliphant had been appointed to take over as the Chan Local Organising Committee chairperson.

The decision to suspend Nonkonyana was taken by the emergency committee and ratified by all NEC members.

It followed remarks where he urged Bafana coach Gordon Igesund to resign or face expulsion in the unlikely event of failing to reach the final or win the Chan that runs from January 11 to February 1.

On return from Morocco, where his side played to a 1-1 draw against the host team, a peeved Igesund responded to Nonkonyana's mandate as "absolute rubbish".

Mumble said this was one of the toughest weeks in the association. He claimed there was a well-orchestrated move to portray

Safa in a bad light, but could not say who the purported shoddy characters behind the move were.

"We will afford Chief the opportunity to defend himself at a disciplinary hearing," said Mumble.

He also revealed they were seeking legal advice on whether they could claim compensation from Puma.

"We were surprised by the statement released by Puma this week as it might compromise us in our negotiations for a new partner."

Barca Held At Osasuna

Osasuna frustrated Barcelona to earn a well-deserved draw with the Spanish champions at the Estadio El Sadar. The home side did very well to close down Barca and not give Neymar and co and space to work with preventing the Catalan giants from creating many scoring opportunities. Pedro had a volley blocked following a Xavi free-kick in the 30th minute, after Adriano had been tripped by Loties. Damiá then missed with a header when he got on the end of a Roberto Torres corner with just five minutes to play in the first-half. Marc Bartra then headed over in the 44th minute after rising highest in the box after being picked put by a Xavi corner. Roberto Torres then tested Barca keeper Victor Valdes with a right-footed shot from outside the box but the shot-stopper was up to the challenge and pulled off a smart save. Cesc Fabregas then had two glorious chances to grab the lead for the visitors first when he shot straight at Osasuna keeper Andrés Fernández, and then shooting over after latching onto a clever through ball by Xavi. The former Arsenal midfielder then came close again in the 67th minute, but his shot flew just wide of the left hand post. Lionel Messi was then brought on to try and grab the Catalans a winner in the 68th minute for the influential Xavi. With 15 minutes remaining it was Fabregas once more but the midfielder's shot was well blocked. Talisman Messi had to wait until the 82nd minute before he forced a save out of Fernández following so good inter-play with Sergio Busquets. Osasuna held on for the final 10 minutes to frustrate the champions and end their eight game winning run and prevent Barca from scoring for the first time in 65 La Liga matches.

Blues Battle Back Against Cardiff

Etoo-v-Cardiff-150x150.jpg
Chelsea battled back from a goal down to beat Cardiff City 4-1 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon. It took a moment of controversy to get the Blues into gear but then they proved to be too strong for the promoted side as they cruised to victory. Samuel Eto'o sent a cross straight into Juan Mata in the eighth minute but the Spaniard completely fluffed the chance when he seemed set to at least work the goalkeeper. David Luiz would then make a crucial error at the other end moments later when he failed to deal with a straight-forward goal kick and Jordon Mutch stole in to lift a finish over Petr Cech. John Terry poked an effort wide in the 17th minute off of a Mata delivery while Cech had to make a great save to keep out a flick from Peter Odemwingie. Controversy then struck in the 33rd minute when Eto'o poked the ball away from the goalkeeper as he was bouncing it. The ball fell to Eden Hazard who quickly found the Cameroonian again and although his shot was blocked, it fell for Hazard who fired home. It is claimed that in terms of the FA regulations, a goalkeeper is not allowed to be challenged when he has gained possession of the ball in his hands, but the goal stood. The Blues started pressing for a second after the interval and saw a good cross from Hazard taken away from Willian at the vital moment but Eto'o would sink his first Chelsea goal in the 66th minute with a cracking strike. The second goal gave the Blues the upper hand but Cech was still forced into a good save to deny Kim Bo-Kyung. Oscar would continue his good scoring form though as he fired over the head of David Marshall to make it 3-1 with 13 minute to go. Hazard then wrapped up the result with nine minutes to go as his shot found its way under the goalkeeper to make it 4-1.

Pique hails dedicated Ronaldo

Real-Madrid-v-Copenhagen-Cristiano-Ronaldo_3013033.jpg

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has praised Cristiano Ronaldo's work ethic and his desire to keep improving.

While a fierce rivalry may exist between Barcelona and Real Madrid and with El Clasico on the horizon, one would expect a certain amount of mind games ahead of the derby clash, but Pique has taken a respectful approach to matters.

The Spaniard has hailed Ronaldo's talent and his determination to always better himself despite reaching the pinnacle of the game.

"[Cristiano Ronaldo] has not changed; he is a player that I have always admired because he is a hard worker that always wants more and more," Pique is quoted as saying by Marca.

"He is a real machine and very ambitious. He never ever stops trying to improve.

"Some say he is the best but he still wants to get better, and for that reason I admire him."

However, Pique is not as complementary of Madrid's recruitment process, asserting that it is Barcelona's youth system that has seen them rise above los Blancos in recent years.

"Barcelona have always been behind Real Madrid, but in the last 10 or 15 years we have turned the situation around," he said.

"We have brought through a great crop of youngsters at the club and this has helped us to compete.

"Real Madrid go one year without winning a title and they spend ?160 million on three players: [Asier] Illarramendi, Isco and [Gareth] Bale. Barcelona can sign Neymar for ?60 or ?70 million but not three players.

"The day we do not have La Masia, things won't be the same."

Ferguson doesn't envy Hodgson

England-boss-Roy-Hodgson-pa_3019895.jpg

Sir Alex Ferguson admits that the job of England manager is a "horrible" one and not a position he would like to be in.

Whether of their own making or not, England managers never seem far from the spotlight for the wrong reasons, with every slight misstep plunged under the microscope.

Current Three Lions boss Roy Hodgson has endured a tough week in what should be a period of celebration following England's qualification for the World Cup, with the focus instead falling on a joke that Hodgson made during the half-time break in Tuesday's match against Poland.

Hodgson has been criticised in some quarters for referring to a joke about a monkey and an astronaut when talking about Andros Townsend, with cries of racism coming to the fore.

However, with Townsend and other members of the squad coming out in support of Hodgson, it appears to be another case of sensationalism in the press taking the gloss off an England success.

Having seen such scenarios play out many times in the past as England managers struggle to meet the expectations of the public, Ferguson concedes that the job is a thankless one.

"I don't think the manager's job with England is a good one. I think it's a horrible job," he told the Daily Telegraph.

"For instance, (Football Association chairman) Greg Dyke comes out and says they're going to win the World Cup in 2022. He may know something about football - and I'm sure he's trying to learn what's going on - but from grassroots levels right up to the national team, that is a massive job.

"Managers have tried different ways of managing the press. Some have tried to curry favour with some and not others. But because England haven't won the World Cup since 1966 they're all going up the same alley. Unless you win, it's a hard job."

Torres Wants It All

178000705-150x150.jpg
Chelsea striker Fernando Torres believes that the London side can win every single competition they are involved in. The Spain goal-getter has found the back of the net twice this season stated that the Premier League and Champions League were not their only targets. "To win everything and it can be realistic," said Torres. "We have a great squad and we have to think positively." "The main thing is to go step by step. We can't say we're just going to focus on the Premier League and Champions League." "We should just think about winning the next game, in winning the next three points, scoring goals, working hard and doing well when we have the chance," he added. "We want to finish with a trophy. The Premier League would be great, the Champions League even better, both of them massive and a few cups, why not?" Torres also admitted that the Premier League was the most competitive league in Europe and that five or six clubs could challenge for the title. "It's very difficult. The league is different than any other," he continued. "It's more competitive, there are not just two or three teams, there are five or six all with the chance if not to win, to qualify for the Champions League."

Uganda fears Kenya-style mall attack

DSC_kampala2.jpg
Uganda has been on high alert over fears of an attack similar to the bloody mall assault by Somalia's al-Shabab fighters in neighbouring Kenya.
Uganda was on high alert on Friday over fears of an attack similar to the bloody mall assault by Somalia's al-Shabab fighters in neighbouring Kenya, where investigators continue to recover charred body parts.

At least 67 people were massacred in the upmarket Westgate shopping centre in Nairobi when gunmen stormed the crowded complex on September 21, firing from the hip and hurling grenades at shoppers and staff.

On Thursday, investigators found a charred skull in the wreckage of the mall, Kenyan police said, adding that DNA testing would be carried out to help identify it. Automatic rifles were also found.

The Kenya Red Cross lists 23 people as missing a month after the siege.

Fears are high the al-Shabab will follow through on their threat to launch further attacks, with the al-Qaeda-linked extremists this week bragging in propaganda posters at rallies in Somalia that "Westgate was just the beginning".

"Stay alert and watch each other's steps and activities, as we are still threatened by terror," the Ugandan police said in a message, as armed security forces patrolled outside shopping centres in the capital Kampala.

It followed a message Tuesday from the US embassy in Uganda which said it was continuing "to assess reports that a Westgate-style attack may soon occur in Kampala".

The embassy said there was no further information on the timing or location of any attack.

Al-Shabab insurgents claimed the Westgate attack, saying it was in revenge for Kenya military action against the group in southern Somalia.

African Union
Uganda also has troops in Somalia with the African Union force that is battling the al-Shabab, and has been attacked on home soil by the extremists before, in 2010 bomb blasts that killed 76 people.

The warnings come as a Norwegian citizen of Somali origin was reported to be suspected of being one of the attackers who stormed the Westgate.

The 23-year-old was named by the BBC as Hassan Abdi Dhuhulow.

Dhuhulow was born in Somalia, but he and his family moved to Norway as refugees in 1999, according to relatives who spoke to the BBC.

However, other relatives denied it was Dhuhulow who appeared in security camera footage of the attack.

Last week, Norway's PST intelligence agency said it had launched a probe after it obtained information about the possible involvement of a Norwegian of Somali origin in both planning and carrying out the attack.

Norwegian investigators have been sent to Nairobi to work with their Kenyan counterparts.

Witnesses in the mall described how the fighters stormed the complex around midday on September 21 when it was crowded with shoppers.

Cold executions
The gunmen coldly executed scores of people, with witnesses recounting how in some cases they called out to those wounded, then finished them off at close range.

The siege was declared over four days later.

Kenya's security forces were initially praised for bravery in battling the insurgents, but were later heavily criticised after shopkeepers entering the mall after the siege said their stores had been systematically looted.

A propaganda video released this week by the al-Shabab praised foreign fighters, showing several insurgents it said had come from Britain and who had been killed in battle.

The video was apparently made before the Westgate attack as it made no reference to it, although it highlights the "suffering of Muslims in Kenya" as well as other countries.

The film, narrated by a man in a military jacket, face hooded in a black mask and speaking with an apparently British accent, claims fighters from multiple nations including Ethiopia, Eritrea, Lebanon, India and Pakistan had all fought with the force. - AFP

Africa's five golden tickets

Asamoah_2729015.jpg

With the African play-off qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup heading into the respective second legs in November, Football411 takes a look at the potential candidates for the five tickets to Brazil.

Since match-day one in group qualification, Nigeria have been heavy favourites to progress to the finals, and their showing in the first-leg against Ethiopia on Sunday underlined their potential as they came from behind to secure an invaluable 2-1 win.

That means the Walia Antelopes will now need to beat the Super Eagles by a two-goal margin in Calabar if they are to upset the odds and progress at Nigeria's expense, while a 2-1 success would force extra-time and a potential penalty shootout.

However, with Africa Cup of Nations holders Nigeria not having lost any of their last 27 World Cup qualifiers, it seems a rather tall order for the country from the Horn of Africa to secure any kind of win, leaving the Super Eagles as the firm favourites to book their place in next year's South American spectacular.

Our prediction: Nigeria to hold fast in Calabar and book their World Cup ticket.

This past weekend's play-off fixtures had, in fact, kicked off 24 hours before the Ethiopia-Nigeria tie, with Burkina Faso battling against Algeria on Saturday in a five-goal thriller which the Burkinabes came out on top of thanks to a last-gasp penalty from Aristide Bance.

The hosts were twice pegged back after having taken the lead at the Stade du 4 Aout, with Jonathan Pitroipa's opener on the stroke of half-time being cancelled out by Sofiane Feghouli (50) before Djakaridja Kone's 65th minute goal was matched by another Fennec Foxes strike, this time Carl Medjani levelling matters just moments later.

With four minutes remaining in the tie, though, Bance managed to put Burkina Faso back in front from the penalty spot, and the 2013 AFCON finalists were this time able to hold out for the win. However, the tie is by no means over, with Algeria's two away goals leaving them very much in with a shout of progressing to Brazil, with a 1-0 home win enough to book their World Cup ticket.

Our prediction: Burkina Faso have proven themselves a tough opponent in knock-out competition and should be able to keep their advantage and progress.

Later that same day, Cote d'Ivoire and Senegal contested one of the most anticipated matches of the play-offs, although in the end the Elephants cruised out comfortable winners with a 3-1 scoreline to leave themselves on the verge of a third consecutive World Cup appearance.

A dominant display saw the Ivory Coast storm into a fifth minute lead, with legendary striker Didier Drogba opening the scoring from the penalty spot, while a Lamine Sane own-goal 11 minutes later coupled with Salomon Kalou's second-half strike put the number-one ranked African side firmly in the driving seat.

However, the Teranga Lions would not leave the Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny empty handed, with Newcastle striker Papiss Cisse snatching a priceless away goal, although the writing appears to be on the wall for the Senegalese, who will need a near-perfect performance at home if they are to secure the 2-0 scoreline they need to upset the Elephants and secure a spot in Brazil.

Our prediction: The Ivory Coast just seem to strong and remain one of the favourites to earn their place in the finals.

Saturday evening then saw the only goalless draw of the play-off first legs, with Tunisia and Cameroon unable to find a way through in their clash in Rades.

However, the match could have finished very differently for Cameroon had it not been for the simply sensational display from goalkeeper Charles Itandje, who produced an inspired performances between the sticks to deny the Eagles of Carthage an invaluable home win, making countless saves as Tunisia ran rampant in their own backyard.

The Indomitable Lions will, however, head back to Cameroon fully confident of doing the business in front of their own fans, although Tunisia's pedigree can never been underestimated, while their failure to qualify for the 2010 showpiece will also likely play a big part in the side's determination to right that wrong.

Our prediction: Home ground advantage in the return leg might just prove vital and Cameroon will have to be considered favourites on home soil.

The best was saved for last in the first-leg fixtures, and Ghana could almost stay at home for the return leg and still progress after they demolished Egypt 6-1 on Tuesday evening to all but secure their place in the finals.

It was an unrestrained home performance from the Black Stars, spearheaded by captain Asamoah Gyan's brace, while an own goal from Wael Gomaa and further strikes from Majeed Waris, Sulley Muntari and Christian Atsu secured the resounding win.

The Pharaohs did manage to secure an away goal after Mohamed Aboutrika slotted home from the penalty spot to make it 2-1 in the first-half, although they will need something truly special in Cairo if they are to overturn a five-goal deficit.

Our prediction: Unsurprisingly, Ghana are the undoubted favourites to make next year's Brazil spectacular.

World Cup play-offs, second-legs:

Friday 15 November

Egypt v Ghana (1-6)

Saturday 16 November

Senegal v Ivory Coast (1-3)

Nigeria v Ethiopia (2-1)

Sunday 17 November

Cameroon v Tunisia (0-0)

Tuesday 19 November

Algeria v Burkina Faso (2-3)

Can Ghana Emulate their 2010 W.C Performance?

Ghana unless something miraculous happens will be among the five countries to represent Africa in Brasil come 2014. They hammered Egypt 6-1 at home in their first leg playoffs,a result which may be hard to reverse. In 2006,though it was their maiden appearance at the world cup finals, the Black Stars showed the world what they're made of in football when they reached the bracket of 16 only to be ejected by Brazil. The Black Stars were the sole flag bearers for Africa in the 2010 w.c quarter finals after the meek surrender of Algeria, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Nigeria and perhaps most galling of all,the host nation South Africa.Expectations were high allover the continent but unfortunately the journey was cut short by Luis Suarez's Uruguay in a dramatic shoot out. They had hoped to better what Cameroon and Senegal had done in 1990 and 2002 respectively but never did they achieve the precious goal. So with all signs pointing to their qualification, should Africa hope for the better in Brazil 2014?

Gerrard: It Was A Relief For Everyone

England captain Steven Gerrard admits his goal against Poland on Tuesday night was a relief for himself and his England teammates as it sealed a 2-0 victory in their final World Cup qualifying game. The game was delicately poised at 1-0 before Gerrard found the back of the net in the 89th minute for the Three Lions and thus secured their place in the World Cup in Brazil next year. Speaking after the game, Gerrard confessed his side was a little nervy before they found the second goal. "It was a relief for everyone," admitted Gerrard. "At 1-0 it was very nervous, tense and edgy, you are always thinking that one mistake and you could be in trouble. "I got a bit of a break with the goal, but when I saw it in the back of the net it was a tremendous feeling. It is a feeling difficult to put into words because I am on such a high. "I have had some wonderful nights as Liverpool captain and I remember the night when Roy phoned me to tell me I was going to be the permanent captain. The feeling I got when that goal went in tonight, that feeling was maxed." Looking to the future and England's participation in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Gerrard believes his side have the ability to do well in the tournament, but has urged fans not to put too much pressure on them and keep their hopes realistic. "The opportunity is there. I have said all week there is a good confidence and belief in the group, but at the same time we are going to keep ourselves grounded and stay humble," added Gerrard. "It is important now that it does not flip and everyone thinks we are going to go and win the World Cup, that we are favourites and everyone gets carried away. "What is important is we have shown everyone we are a good team. We have not felt sorry for ourselves when we have had criticism, we have rolled ourselves up, tried to work hard and put it right. "It is a great feeling to be in Brazil and hopefully we can go in with a little less pressure on ourselves and surprise a few."

Stimac Offers Resignation

Igor-Stimac-150x150.jpg
Despite losing 2-0 to Scotland in their final World Cup qualifying match, Croatia still qualified for the play-offs to get to Brazil next year, but that does not seem to be enough for the critics according to coach Igor Stimac. Following the loss to Scotland on Tuesday night, the Croatian coach offered his resignation to the Croatian Football Federation because he is fed-up with the criticism being labelled at him and his team throughout the qualifying campaign. Stimac said he was happy to leave his post if there was someone better to do the job and has left his fate in the federation's hands. "It is a bad defeat. I offered my mandate (resignation) to the president of the Croatian football federation because of the latest results of our team, because everything that surrounds us," said Stimac. "Never mind that we qualified for the play-offs, I want to show some morale, certain responsibility and if there is anyone in the federation that does not believe in my work I want to give them the chance to change. "They will have a meeting to discuss it (my resignation). "It is all about the positiveness surrounding the football in our country. "It seems we are not happy in Croatia to qualify for the play-offs. "We were not happy after the first game even though we beat Macedonia, we were not happy in the second when we drew against Belgium or beating Wales 2-0, they said it was supposed to be 15-0. "After Wales we went to Macedonia and beat them 2-1 and they said that was not good because they were on the up, we beat Serbia 2-0 and they said we barely survived and the goalkeeper saved us. "We beat Wales 2-1 and they said we were lucky. That's how it works in Croatia. "There were a lot of people against me from the beginning."

Italy Remain Unbeaten

184699016-150x150.jpg
Substitute Mario Balotelli equalised to keep Italy's unbeaten World Cup qualifying run intact as the hosts drew 2-2 with Armenia at the Stadio San Paolo. Italy started off this tie having already qualified for next year's World Cup in Brazil, and this showed as Armenia grabbed an early opener through a Yura Movsisyan shot when Alberto Aquilani had lost possession in midfield to the dangerous Henrikh Mkhitaryan. Napoli's Lorenzo Insigne hit the post in the 23rd minute signalling the 2006 World Cup champion's intentions. A minute later and the hosts were on level terms; again it was Insigne that was the creator as he chipped an accurate cross into the box where Alessandro Florenzi was on hand to head past the helpless Armenia goalkeeper Roman Berezovski. Armenia would not give up and pressed forward in search of their second, Borussia Dortmund's Mkhitaryan coming close after beating his marker but he could only drag his shot wide of Federico Marchetti's goal with 30 minutes played. The Lazio's keeper, who is standing in for the rested Gianluigi Buffon was forced into a save in the 34th minute when he palmed a way a low drive by Armenia's Aras Ozbiliz. Insigne had a lively first-half and came close again in the 36th minute; the Napoli man produced a wonderful back-heel creating space for himself but his shot went just wide of the far post. Two minutes later and the little man from Naples then saw his cushioned volley flashes marginally wide of the target after a cross from Ignazio Abate. The teams went into the half-time break with one goal apiece and Armenia's playmaker Mkhitaryan putting in a solid performance and Italian youngster Insinge proving a thorn in the side of the Armenian defence. The playmaker then did grab a deserved goal for Armenia in the 70th minute, after the second-half had started where it left off with some more end to end play. However, their blushes were spared somewhat as Balotelli ran on to Andrea Pirlo's pass and hooked the ball in. Armenia's Haroyan should have claimed a famous winner for his side with 10 minutes to play, but he could only send his free header over ensuring the Italians remain unbeaten in the qualifiers having already booked their place on the plane to Brazil.

Black Stars Too Good For Egypt

Christian-Atsu-130124-Dribbles-G-300.jpg
Ghana crushed a below-par Egypt 6-1 at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi in their first leg play-off qualifying game for the 2014 World Cup and now have one foot on the plane to Brazil. A brace from captain Asamoah Gyan inspired the hosts to a comfortable victory over the Pharaohs and the visitors will rue the defensive frailties which haunted them throughout the 90 minutes. Gyan gave the Black Stars an ideal start to the qualifier when he linked up with striker Majeed Waris in the fourth minute, and his shot had too much power to give Egypt's goalkeeper Sherif Ekrami any chance. The Egyptians seemed to spring to life after the goal and started to keep more possession for the visitors but they conceded an own goal by Wael Gomaa and this seemed to kill any momentum from the visitors. Mohammed Abu Trika did however manage to claw one back for Egypt four minutes before the half-time break, after Rashid Sumaila brought down striker Mohamed Salah in the box. Ghana waited just three minutes before they responded and scored their third of the qualifier when Abdul Majeed Waris headed home after getting on the end of a Sulley Muntari cross. Gyan's header, his second of the game in the 54th minute all but ended the match as well as Egypt's hopes of qualifying for next year's World Cup. Things went from bad to worse for Egypt, when their goalkeeper Ekrami had to be stretchered off and replaced by Ahmed Al Shenawy in the 57th minute. Al Shenawy was called into action in the 70th minute but was only able to pull down striker Warris and concede a penalty after being on the field for just over 10 minutes. The ever impressive Muntari stepped up to take the penalty and slotted home for the hosts, scoring their fifth of this first leg tie with 71 minutes played. Substitute Christian Atsu capped off a wonderful performance for the Black Stars when he scored a solo goal, cutting in from the right wing and smashing a left-footed shot that cannoned in off the right post and into the back of the net with just three minutes plus stoppage time left. The Black Stars will have sent out a warning with this result before next year's World Cup handing Egypt their biggest loss in over 20 years, while the Pharaohs will know that their dream to make Brazil is all but over.

Portugal ran out comfortable 3-0 winners over 10-man Luxembourg in a 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Tuesday night but will still need to go through the play-offs to book a spot in Brazil. The Portuguese had a slim chance of toppling Russia in Group F but the latter confirmed automatic qualification with a 1-1 draw in Azerbaijan. Portugal started the game well, even without star player and captain Cristiano Ronaldo who was out due to suspension. Nani, who was given the armband for the clash, stepped up in his absence though, testing the goalkeeper with a low drive in the ninth minute before Helder Postiga was denied on the rebound. Fabio Coentrao then rattled the woodwork with a header before Nani was denied again by a brilliant save from Jonathan Joubert. The pressure was starting to tell for the visitors and they would crack when Aurelien Joachim was sent off for a studs-up challenge on Andre Almeida. The opening goal then arrived two minutes later when Joao Moutinho slid a perfect pass through to Silvestre Varela who rounded the goalkeeper and fired into an empty. The hosts were in complete control and six minutes later Nani traded passes with Moutinho before smashing a superb finish into the roof of the net. The game slowed down after the break with Portugal in command, though Lars Krogh Gerson had a rare chance for the visitors and fired straight at the goalkeeper. Nani was denied on a few more occasions while the Manchester United man saw his inviting cross wasted late on. The hosts would finally wrap things up with 11 minutes to go though as Hugo Almeida flicked on a cross from Josue and Postiga slotted his finish under the goalkeeper.

Bukenya Happy With First Chiefs Game

Although it was an unofficial debut for Kaizer Chiefs, new signing Ivan Bukenya was happing with his showing in the Macufe Cup against Bloemfontein Celtic on Sunday. Chiefs may have lost 1-0 on the day, but the 21-year-old Ugandan defender was happy to get some playing time. "When I stepped out of the tunnel to a full stadium, I felt at home because I enjoy playing in front of a big crowd," said Bekenya. "It felt great to represent a big team as I have always waited for the chance to play for my team. "I see myself growing as a player here because I am playing for the right team. "The Technical Team, Management and the players are helping me to adapt. "I want to achieve big things for the club. Every time I come to training and playing in friendlies, I see myself helping the club to achieve things going forward." Reflecting on the game itself, Bekenya felt he did will, but admitted he was sad to lose. "They scored through a set play," added Bekenya. "We saw our mistake and we will rectify that at training. "A loss in a first game gives me a chance to learn, but despite the loss, after 90 minutes I felt good. "My first touch was superb because I enjoyed the game from the warm up. The South African style of football is good, this is really what I hoped to be a part of, it is really good. "The referee booked me unfairly though, because I was protecting the ball. I was shielding the ball and football is about charging your opponent."

We Need Career Guidance in Ugandan Socer:

Uganda is one of the most gifted countries in Africa when it comes to sports talents. However, the authorities have done less or nothing atall in as far as grooming these talents is concerned. Where in the world will you find athletes struggling on their own to represent their country? It is only in Uganda where an athlete will suffer alone for a medal only to be hosted for dinners on their return! With Football,it's even worse. Players are scattered allover the country playing for fun. No body is there to help them know that playing socer is another career that can lead one to success, thus, they realise it when age isn't on their side. Because they're desparate at that time, then things like playing 'bicuba',absconding from their clubs arise. After, local club officials(most of them grew under the same set up)urge these players to re-sign for their clubs! So Aren't we spoiling the future?

Brazil Beat Chipolopolo In Friendly

Second-half goals from Oscar and Dede took Brazil to a hard-fought 2-0 win over Zambia in a friendly match in Beijing on Tuesday. The 2014 FIFA World Cup hosts started the game on the front foot and hit the crossbar just three minutes in through a superb free-kick from Neymar while Dani Alves shot just wide moments later. Alexandre Pato tried an audacious lobbed effort from distance but couldn't catch out Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Mweene, while Ramires combined well with Neymar in the 15th minute before sending his shot wayward. Jacob Mulenga failed to beat the goalkeeper as Zambia finally put on some pressure while Neymar couldn't get enough on his header in the 37th minute after being picked out by Maxwell. Brazil finished the half strong but Mweene was determined as he kept out shots from Pato and Neymar to ensure that the deadlock remained at the break. Chipolopolo could have snatched the opener six minutes after the break but Mayuka just missed out on poking the ball home after a shot was deflected across goal. Brazil responded perfectly though as Oscar's shot took a wicked deflection and looped over the goalkeeper in the 59th minute to put the South Americans ahead. Paulinho's went close with a rising effort moments later but a second was on the way and it arrived in the 66th minute as Dede got away from his defender a nodded home from close range off of a free-kick from Neymar. Zambia tried to get back into the game but Brazil threatened to score more with Oscar being denied by the goalkeeper and Hulk smashing a shot just wide as they secured the win.

Perez Upset Over Bale Nonsense

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has voiced his surprise following more reports which suggest Gareth Bale had a slipped disc in his back and could require surgery. Perez did not mince his words when he said that this story was intended to hurt the club's and Bale's reputation, and their lawyers are looking into taking action. "I'm surprised. It's difficult to understand such a cruel story," said Perez. "It was the first time I had heard talk of that subject (a herniated disc). The paper also wrote that I had been told about this problem during the medical. It's totally false. "It's very serious as it plays with the image of Real Madrid and Bale. It can be very damaging and is not a minor issue. We want to know why it happened. "It surprised us even more when we found out a reporter from the paper (Marca) called our medical team, as well as Bale's representative, and decided not to even put a line in about what they said. "It was something that was intended to do harm and that's why we are surprised. It affects the image, dignity and economic value of Bale. "The player and his team are worried because they have contracts and campaigns that this could affect. They've said he has a hernia when he doesn't and our lawyers are looking at what can be done." Perez was so adamant that Balewas fit he suggested he could play on Sunday against Malaga. "Gareth is calm and ready and is hoping to play on Saturday," added Perez. "Everybody knows that, because he did not have a proper pre-season, he suffered a thigh strain. "He is training well and wants to play and demonstrate that all this has just been an unpleasant and unfortunate start." -

Amnesty: Hundreds die in harsh Nigerian prisons

Nearly 1 000 people, mostly suspected Islamist militants, have died in Nigerian prisons in 2013 alone, says Amnesty International.
Nearly 1 000 people, mostly suspected Islamist militants, died in Nigerian prisons in the first half of this year, Amnesty International said on Tuesday.

Amnesty said some of the 950 victims were suspected to have been executed but many died because of the harsh, overcrowded conditions of the prisons.

Some starved to death. Others died after being shot or badly beaten then getting no medical attention.

"The evidence we've gathered suggests that hundreds of people died in military custody in 2013 alone. This is a staggeringly high figure that requires urgent action by the Nigerian government," Lucy Freeman, Amnesty International's deputy Africa director, said in a statement.

Military spokesperson Brigadier General Chris Olukolade said the army had not yet seen the report but would respond when it became available to them. The government's habitual position is that detainees are well treated and rare cases of abuse dealt with.

A four-year-old insurgency waged by Islamist sect Boko Haram, aiming to revive a medieval Islamic empire in Nigeria's largely Muslim northeast, has killed thousands and brought a heavy military presence across the region.

Residents of affected areas, as well as numerous human rights groups, have long accused the Nigerian military of carrying out summary executions of Boko Haram suspects and others - a charge it always denies.

Arbitrary detention
Privately, security officials admit such abuses are more widespread but see them as a reaction to an enemy whose vicious guerrilla tactics create a climate of fear.

Amnesty said that in April, delegates counted 20 emaciated corpses lying on the ground in the compound of a hospital. It showed grisly pictures of the corpses.

In July, a Nigerian government rights watchdog said it had credible reports the country's forces carried out extra-judicial killings, torture, rape and arbitrary detention in the northeast. That study was notable as it is rare for a government agency publish reports of abuses.

Nigeria's President Goodluck Jonathan ordered a military offensive against the Islamist rebels in May, including air strikes on bases, which authorities say has driven fighters out of camps near the border with Chad, Niger and Cameroon.

But it has so far failed to quell the insurgency, still seen as the main threat to Africa's top oil producer, and which has become more targeted towards civilians.

Rights groups say army abuses may be counter-productive because they stir anti-government rage that helps keep the insurgency going.

In the first big crackdown on Boko Haram in 2009, 800 members were killed, including its founder Mohammed Yusuf. Far from ending the insurgency, it transformed it into something much more radical with ties to al-Qaeda's Saharan wing. - Reuters

Measuring adult skills: What can you do?

IN THE sprawling Siemens factory complex in Berlin, teenagers in blue overalls are learning how to assemble circuit boards, the first step in their three-year apprenticeships. Besides instruction in technology, robotics and other engineering skills, the young recruits-1,350 in the company's training centre at any given time-are drilled in literacy and numeracy. By the time they leave, they are expected to be able to summarise tasks, and how to solve them, in English as well as in German. As countries vie to improve their training and increase their productivity, the thoroughness of the Siemens approach is a model for many. At €100,000 ($135,000) per apprentice, it is a hefty investment. Norbert Giesen, a senior trainer, says that, because production methods have become more susceptible to innovation, the company now emphasises "soft" skills, such as how to build teams and divide tasks efficiently, which remain helpful even if processes change.

Itandje Stars As Cameroon Earn Draw

Tunisia and Cameroon 0-0 draw in Rades with both sides wasting a host of opportunities, and the Indomitable Lions goalkeeper Charles Itandje putting in a wonderful performance. Within 30 seconds of the game starting Tunisia's Chikaoui smacked an effort from the edge of the area but Cameroon goalkeeper Itandje was able to beat the ball away. The home side got off to a strong start and put Cameroon under pressure from the first whistle, with Itandje having to make another point blank save from a Houcine Ragued header with only four minutes played. Itandje was single-handedly keeping Volker Finks men in this game, saving smartly when Wissem Ben Yahia struck a ferocious swerving effort but the Koyaspor shot-stopper was able to tip over. Tunisia again came close when another header by the home side's Chikaoui was saved by Cameroon's in-form goalkeeper. The away side grew in confidence as the game wore on and 30 minutes in Joel Matip tried a low drive from outside the box but Ben Cherifia was able to gather it easily. Tunisia's substitute Ben Youssef had the best chance to open the scoring in the second-half when he got on the end of a great cross by Derbaly but his header was off target. Cameroon then almost grabbed the opener themselves as Joel Matip found space following some neat play by Alex Song and Makoun, but Ben Cherfia able to clear with his legs following the Schalke forward's timid shot. Pierre Webo then definitely had the miss of the match following a game of many missed chances, the Fenerbache forward had the goal gaping but with the ball coming at an awkward height, but bundled the ball behind with his midriff. Rud Krol would have been disappointed that his team had not been able to take at least one of the many chances created, but to be fair both teams could have walked away with a victory, and this being the first goalless draw in the African play-offs of World Cup qualification. Cameroon will be confident when they host Tunisia in the return leg, and will also be hoping to have their keeper Itandje in similar form after a wonderful performance. -

GLT Alert! Ethiopia had what looked like good goal disallowed, ruled to have not crossed the line v Nigeria (World Cup Play-Off)

There was huge moment of controversy in today’s African World Cup Play-off 1st leg between Ethiopia and Nigeria, as the Super Eagles take a 2-1 lead into their return home leg.

At 0-0 though, Ethiopia were denied what looks like a perfectly goal that fully crossed the line, only to see it ignored, judged to not have entirely crossed the line.

On 24′ Saladin chipped a lovely ball over the top for Enyeam, who got a bit of a clumsy shot away, and just as it appeared to have agonisingly crossed, Nigerian defender Oboabona appeared to clear it with an acrobatic left-footed clearance.

Enyeam wheeled away in celebration, just as the local Ethiopian fans were convinced it was over, but play continued as the goal appeals were turned away.

It’s not 100% conclusive from the footage, but the second replay in particular does appear to show the whole circumference just about cross at the moment Oboabona clears it.

Fully over or not? Watch the incident below and decide for yourself.

The cruel irony for Ethiopia is that goal line technology will be used at next summer’s World Cup finals, so it could really stick in the craw if this moment proves crucial in their play-off.

That said, they still would have only hypothetically drawn the home leg had this goal be counted (though we’ll never know how events would have unfolded), so it’s unlikely to become a continental scandal.
